Abstract:

This history has been prepared amid the pressing cares and labors of the past six months. It is not to be supposed that the views taken of the events, especially of those of the years 1832-33 and 1850-55, will be accepted by all as just. Those were times of great excitement and bitter partizan feeling concerning the affairs of the College. The author has studied those periods carefully in the light of the official records and of the newspapers of the day, and through conversations and correspondence with many persons who had part in them or were spectators of them. He states his views confidently, therefore, although it is probable that many will object to them
