Damaged books are either repaired at Kelvin Smith Library or sent to our local commercial bindery. The majority of books and other library materials will be repaired and available within 2-4 weeks. The time each item remains in repair depends on its condition, usage urgency, and treatment needs. Books and other materials can be off the shelf for one day up to one year.
Preservation also repairs damaged microfilm and video tapes, and cleans and replaces/repairs CDs and DVDs and their cases. Please give these items to library staff at the Main Service Center desk so we can fix or replace them.
If a book or journal you are trying to use is damaged or has missing pages, please inform staff at the Main Service Center when you return the book. They will send it to Preservation to be repaired. If you are using a damaged Reference book, or microfilm, bring the item to a Circualtion Services staff member and repairs will be done on a RUSH basis. Missing book or journal pages will be replaced by Preservation if possible.
Books that are too brittle for use or items that are damaged beyond repair will be considered for reformatting/digitization or replacement by a reprint or new copy.
Any item in the library's catalog with the status "in repair" can be requested through Ohio Link or Interlibrary loan. If we are the only loaning library or if the item is needed immediately, contact Preservation at 368-3465, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org; we will locate the item and if possible, arrange for in-library use and/or repair it within 24 hours.
