Restrictions: The Special Collections Research Center is open to any interested researcher upon presentation of a valid CASE ID or other valid official identification card. The Center is open to other researchers by appointment only.
Aquisition: This collection consists of materials in many different formats donated between 2003 and 2009 to the Special Collections Research Center of the Kelvin Smith Library. In December 2003 business records were transfered from the offices of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), where Dr. Bender served as Executive Director from 1979-2001; in December 2005 Dr. Bender transferred his personal papers; and in 2009 he donated additional personal papers and SLA records.
Dr. David R. Bender was the Executive Director of the Special Libraries Association from 1979 until his retirement in 2001. He earned a BS in Education with a Minor in Library Science from Kent State University, a Master’s degree in Library Science from Case Western Reserve University, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and foundations from The Ohio State University. After serving as a librarian and consultant in education-related posts on both the local and state level (including as a consultant for the Ohio State Department of Education), he was named Chief of the School Library Media Services Branch in the Division of Library Development and Services within the Maryland State Department of Education in 1972, remaining there until his appointment to SLA.
He held membership in many professional organizations, including SLA, the American Library Association, and the American Society of Association Executives; and was listed in Who’s Who in America in 1980-1981 and the International Who’s Who of Professionals in 1996. He authored many books and articles related to school library administration and educational media, and in 1981 was listed in Contemporary Authors.
The bulk of this collection consists of publications by and about Dr. Bender, regarding his professional career from 1965-2001. The collection also contains texts of speeches and presentations; applications and nominations for various awards and professional positions; correspondence; materials related to his retirement; to his book publisher; audio-visual materials; photographs; awards; and artifacts. The materials are arranged chronologically within each series, and date from 1956-2002, with most of the material dating from 1970-1990.
