Quantity:  7 linear feet, including 1 photograph album and 1 box of oversize materials.

Restrictions: The Special Collections Research Center is open to any interested researcher upon presentation of a valid CASE ID or other valid official identification card. The Center is open to other researchers by appointment only.

Aquisition: This collection consists of materials in many different formats donated between 2003 and 2009 to the Special Collections Research Center of the Kelvin Smith Library. In December 2003 business records were transfered from the offices of the Special Libraries Association (SLA), where Dr. Bender served as Executive Director from 1979-2001; in December 2005 Dr. Bender transferred his personal papers; and in 2009 he donated additional personal papers and SLA records.

Biography: David Ray Bender, Ph.D. (1942- )

Dr. David R. Bender was the Executive Director of the Special Libraries Association from 1979 until his retirement in 2001. He earned a BS in Education with a Minor in Library Science from Kent State University, a Master’s degree in Library Science from Case Western Reserve University, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and foundations from The Ohio State University. After serving as a librarian and consultant in education-related posts on both the local and state level (including as a consultant for the Ohio State Department of Education), he was named Chief of the School Library Media Services Branch in the Division of Library Development and Services within the Maryland State Department of Education in 1972, remaining there until his appointment to SLA.

He held membership in many professional organizations, including SLA, the American Library Association, and the American Society of Association Executives; and was listed in Who’s Who in America in 1980-1981 and the International Who’s Who of Professionals in 1996. He authored many books and articles related to school library administration and educational media, and in 1981 was listed in Contemporary Authors.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this collection consists of publications by and about Dr. Bender, regarding his professional career from 1965-2001. The collection also contains texts of speeches and presentations; applications and nominations for various awards and professional positions; correspondence; materials related to his retirement; to his book publisher; audio-visual materials; photographs; awards; and artifacts. The materials are arranged chronologically within each series, and date from 1956-2002, with most of the material dating from 1970-1990.

Series 1: Publications Books, magazine and newspaper articles, pamphlets, newsletters and brochures, either authored by Dr. Bender (in whole or in part) or published by the SLA under his authority (1965-2002).

Publications. Maryland Department of Education Official publications (1973-1978).
Series 3:
Publications. Biographical Printed materials (library, information science and management association publications) with Dr. Bender as the subject (1968-2001).
Series 4:
Publications. Miscellaneous Miscellaneous publications (1970-2000).
Series 5:
Applications and Nominations Job applications and nominations for various professional positions (1973-1978).
Series 6:
Shoe String Press Contracts, manuscripts (with and without revisions), book reviews and other materials related to the publishing of Dr. Bender’s book “Learning Resources and the Instructional Program in Community Colleges” (1978-1981).
Series 7:
Speeches and Presentations Text of speeches and presentations on topics in library science and professional management (1969-2001).
Series 8:
Correspondence Business correspondence (1965-2001), arranged by correspondents and then chronologically within each file.
Series 9: Retirement Materials related to Dr. Bender’s retirement in 2001: letter of resignation, invitations to retirement party, song lyrics and skits performed during party, SLA press releases and messages of congratulation (2000-2001).
Series 10:
Miscellaneous Miscellaneous (1965-1981).
Series 11: Bender Family History “Continuum of a Heart; A Family Tapestry: Remembrances of four generations”, written by Dr. Bender, based on personal recollections and oral histories from other family members.
Series 12: Personality Profiles Results of Myers-Briggs personality tests for staff of SLA (1996-2000).
Series 13: Photographs Photos of Dr. Bender and other library professionals taken at SLA headquarters and various SLA functions around the world (1974-1993). Housed separately, in archival binder.
Series 14: Audio-Visual Materials Audiocassette, reel-to-reel tape, videocassettes and filmstrips from SLA and work as consultant with Ohio Department of Education. (None dated, except for retirement video; housed separately.)
Series 15:
 Presentations, Awards, Certificates and Diplomas Begins in junior high school years, and continues throughout professional career, culminating with SLA's John Cotton Dana award in 2001 (1956-2001).
Series 16:
Certificates, Awards, and Photographs, Framed and Oversize Continuation of previous series, but requiring separate housing (1977-1999).
