Crowell achieved the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, serving as Assistant Secretary of War and Director of Munitions during World War I.  After the war he resumed his business career and civic activities in Cleveland.  He died there on September 8, 1952 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
