Acquisition: This collection was given to the Case Institute of Technology Archive of Contemporary Science and Technology in 1961 by Mrs. Dorothy Goodale Dana.

Biography: Allston Dana (1884-1952)

Allston Dana was born in Boston, 1884, of a distinguished New England family; he was the grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  Dana graduated Harvard in 1906, and MIT in 1908.  He was a civil engineer and worked on the design of the Delaware Bridge, the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and the Triborough, Hudson and Bronx-Whitestone Bridges.  Additionally he worked on the design of the third lock of the Panama Canal.  Dana died on May 12, 1952, in Princeton, N.J. aged 67.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of Dana's working papers regarding his contributions to the design of the third lock of the Panama Canal, and several bridges. Materials included are blueprints, drawings, printed matter and correspondence. Separate inventories of technical drawings are included with this collection
