Learn a language at your own pace using the Pimsleur Approach!

 
Are you looking for a fast, effective way to learn a language on your own? Try the Pimsleur approach in the Freedman Center!

The Pimsleur approach to language learning works entirely through listening. The lessons are constructed around dialogs and learners spend approximately 30 minutes going through each one. Learners are challenged to recall and construct phrases from memory rather than to just repeat them and are tested and retested on new material at varying intervals throughout the course to reinforce memory.

The courses are designed to help learners gain conversational abilities quickly. Unlike many other self-study programs, the Pimsleur approach, if correctly followed, will allow you to ask questions and understand responses in your chosen language so that you can engage in meaningful dialogues with native speakers. Pimsleur's language programs vary from 10 lessons to 30. The Freedman Center has purchased many of their full courses (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), including:

bookchip The Pimsleur language programs used in the Freedman Center are provided on Audiofy Bookchips. The bookchips are read using the Audiofy player, which is installed on an SD card that will be provided to you when you check in at the front counter. (If you don't know what this means, don't worry! We do and we will be able to help you get set up you come in.)

To use the Pimsleur book chips, you will need to:

  1. Bring your valid Case ID (student, staff, or faculty) and: Come to the Freedman Center and ask to use the Pimsleur materials.
  2. Take the USB key, a bookchip reader, a Pimsleur SD card and USB headphones you receive from the front desk staff to a language learning computer. Insert the USB key into the USB port on the keyboard to unlock the computer.
  3. Place the Pimsleur SD card inside the card reader, and place the reader in a USB port on the side of the monitor.
  4. Wait for the Audiofy player to begin automatically.
