International News Commons
Read and watch broadcast news from around the world in the Kelvin Smith Library International News Commons (INC) in the KSL Lower Level Lounge.
Catch up on news from your home country, compare international coverage of events, or brush up on your foreign language skills. We hope that you find the International News Commons an ideal place to meet over a cup of coffee or snack, to gather information and to connect with others interested in international cultures and events.
SCOLA International Newscasts
Do you think all national newscasts are alike? Watch news broadcasts from around the world and make up your own mind! Our plasma screen is set to provide international news 24x7 from SCOLA's Channel One. The news broadcasts range from 30 to 90 minutes and are broadcast in the original language without subtitles. Even if you're not completely fluent in a particular language, watching the broadcasts will provide you with the visual context that is needed to increase your language and cultural comprehension skills.
Find a favorite program posted near the SCOLA plasma TV in the Lower Level, or use the online schedule!

International Newspapers in the INC
Now you can read international news, on the same day that it's published! Every day, KSL prints several dozen international newspapers for the INC newspaper racks in the lower level lounge. From the UK to Australia, or Jordan to India and beyond, the newspapers are true daily copies, complete with images. Enjoy the international newspapers and please return them to their racks in the INC so others can find them with the week's issues. Compare coverage of world events—also remember to read the U.S. newspapers on KSL's main floor, to get coverage from both the "home" and "abroad" perspective!
International Newspaper Database
The INC is a great place to relax with a newspaper, but when you can't be there, take advantage of the online access to over 500 international newspapers & 37 languages, on the PressDisplay database. Watch a scrolling ticker-tape of world news across the top, plus thumbnail images of the database's newspapers. Select one of the 70 countries from the left side column to see a full-length, full-color image of the newspaper. Set the display for 1 or 2-page view, and watch the corners turn as if you were holding the actual paper. If you see an audio image, click on it—and have the newspaper "read aloud" to you!
If you also love the world in pictures, the PressDisplay database is for you, with dozens of images for different sections (news, sports, business, entertainment, editorials, & more) from around the world. Set a language on the right side column for the main page display so you can practice your French or Russian (also Afrikaans, Czech, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai) and discover the top papers in that country's language. Traveling the world has never been easier!
