Damaged Library Materials

Damaged books are either repaired at Kelvin Smith Library or sent to a commercial bindery. The majority of books and other materials will be repaired and available within 2-3 weeks. The time an item remains in repair depends on each item's condition and treatment needs. Books and other materials can be off the shelf for one day up to one year.
You can request any book with status "in repair" through Ohio Link or Interlibrary loan. If you need a book immediately, call the Preservation Department at 368-3465 and we will locate it and if possible, arrange in-library use or repair it within 24 hours.
If a book or journal you are trying to use is damaged or has missing pages, please inform staff when you return the book to Circulation. They will send it to Preservation to be repaired. If you are using a damaged Reference book, tell the Reference librarian and we will handle the book as a RUSH repair. Missing pages will be replaced by the department if possible.
The Preservation Department also repairs damaged microfilm and video tapes, and cleans and replaces/repairs CDs and DVDs and their cases. Please give these items to library Circulation staff so we can fix or replace them.
