Assigned Faculty Carrels at KSL: A Pilot Program

Summer 2011–Update

The faculty assigned carrels are moving to the 3rd floor room overlooking Freiberger Field and Thwing Center. Newly painted, the space provides a quiet respite from campus offices and the activity of the library. Completion is expected by early fall semester, when the large study tables are removed to the general library space and faculty carrels are installed.

Spring 2011–Pilot Begins

Update: KSL now provides five faculty carrels in a secure, shared room. Faculty members who have an assigned carrel in Lower Level 05 Room also have a key to enter the room whenever KSL is open, including during 24x7 service.

Within the secured room, there are five open standard desk carrels with desk space, bookshelf, electrical outlet, and access to WiFi. Individual lockers are available for personal belongings. Locks and keys are available specifically for these lockers and can be borrowed at the Main Service Desk. Faculty who wish to have other items in the room can bring items in as long as the items fit within the space of the assigned carrel.

Pilot Program

This pilot program will continue through summer 2011. Modifications to the program will be considered during summer based upon the experience during the pilot. KSL does not guarantee that that the pilot will be continued indefinitely nor that the program will be expanded in the future.

Stipulations

All faculty who are assigned carrels will sign a statement stipulating that they understand and agree to the following:

  • This is a pilot program.
  • The carrel is assigned to the individual faculty member only through summer 2011
  • If the program continues into FY2012, the “first come, first served” rule will apply again for FY2012, i.e., an assigned carrel for FY2011 does not guarantee any preference for an assignment for FY2012. A new campus-wide announcement would be made indicating availability for the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • Any additional furniture or equipment brought by the faculty member must fit within the confines of the assigned cubicle.
  • Any library materials (books, journals, etc.) that are kept in the carrel overnight or longer must be checked out. KSL reserves the right to inspect the shelves to ensure that all materials left in the carrels have been properly checked out.
  • All rules that apply elsewhere concerning library circulation policies or building-use policies apply to the room, carrels and materials contained therein. For example, materials checked out are subject to recall if needed by another user, and no smoking will be permitted in the faculty study room.
  • This is a shared quiet space intended for research and writing. It is not designed to be used as office space, group meeting space, or to conduct phone calls.
  • KSL will bear no responsibility for the loss of any belongings that might be stored (temporarily or overnight) in the room.
