Job Title: Research Services Librarian

Job Description:

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Research Services Librarian (RSL) is responsible for managing a balanced portfolio of four key activities in support of the programs of the College of Arts and Sciences: (1) collection management, (2) Information fluency instruction, (3) research support, and (4) relationship management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Develop and implement collection policies and resource selection, qualitative and quantitative evaluation consistent with university programs and the library's strategic goals, and oversight and management of annual budget allocations;
  2. Participate in the development and delivery of a new information fluency model and output measures, partnering with faculty to provide a high-quality instructional experience, and deliver high quality instruction using a variety of techniques and formats.
  3. Provide research support for students and faculty, including meeting regularly with faculty to learn about their research needs and delivering support in buildings across campus.
  4. Manage relationships including regularly promoting library resources and services, developing strategies and materials to promote curricular and academic goals, and conducting and analyzing user research through surveys, focus groups, etc. to ascertain the level of community satisfaction with library services.
  5. Keep abreast of new models of research within the arts and sciences disciplines.
  6. Develop formal and informal methods of engagement that highlight the Library's role in promoting and furthering this research.
  7. Work closely with other team members to foster collaborative initiatives.
  8. Regularly engage in providing demonstrations to faculty and students of emerging scholarly resources and technologies.

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

CONTACTS

Department: The RSL has regular contact with the Research Services Team Leader to ensure excellent service. The RSL has moderate contact with staff on all levels of the organization to support the provision of library services. Occasional contact with managers and staff of other units in the library as required by projects.

University: The RSL consults frequently with faculty, including assigned liaison faculty, faculty committees and other department administrators to determine teaching and research informational requirements to make appropriate information management decisions. Work regularly with faculty to develop, review, and improve information management policies and procedures. Consult occasionally with other campus librarians to coordinate information management decisions for the provision of library services. Consult with staff throughout the university to develop and implement programs for the delivery of services to students and faculty.

External: Participate in local, regional and national organizations to maintain a network of informational professionals. Infrequent to occasional collaboration with colleagues in OhioLINK and other academic libraries. Infrequent to occasional contact with vendors to support print and electronic resource selections in assigned subject areas.

Students: Frequent daily communication with students to provide assistance and information resources to support their education and research needs.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may supervise non-exempt staff, student employees, and temporary full or part-time workers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: The initial rank of the RSL will be based upon the qualifications of the individual with regard to that person's professional knowledge, abilities and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and, professional qualities consistent with university and library values.

Education/Licensing: Master's degree in a relevant discipline, with completion of a second advanced degree within the area of specialization preferred; BA/BS in a relevant discipline .

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Require knowledge of structure, organization, creation, management, dissemination, use, and curation of scholarship and information resources;
  2. Ability to evaluate critically and to assess existing and new information services and technologies.
  3. Understanding of, and the ability to respond effectively to, changes in teaching, learning, and research;
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with others; excellent oral and written communication skills;
  5. Effective research and discovery skills;
  6. Prefer demonstrated knowledge about trends in the creation and dissemination of scholarly information, policy and communication; skills necessary to analyze complex problems; the application of appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods, the ability to convey effectively information to clients about the application of library services to their teaching, research, and learning; an understanding of current and emerging trends in research, learning theories, instructional methods, and service assessment and outcomes-measures. Consistent with the defined competencies and expectations for librarians as appropriate to the rank in which the individual is placed, the individual should demonstrate a record of or potential for professional contributions (such as in university and community service, professional presentations and publications, teaching beyond one's area of assigned job responsibilities, professional recognition) and of leadership abilities and skills (such as critical thinking, risk taking, creativity, embracing responsibility and accountability, the creation of partnerships inside and outside of the library, and serving as an effective library advocate within the university).

What and Where is Siegal?

The notation "Siegal" in the online catalog refers to the Aaron Garber Library of the Siegal College of Judaic Studies at 26500 Shaker Blvd. Cleveland OH 44122. The Aaron Garber Library is the academic library of the College and the central library of the Cleveland Jewish community. It includes 30,000 volumes, plus periodicals, language tapes, music and text CDs in English, Hebrew and Yiddish. The Library's electronic catalog is part of the online library system managed by Case Western Reserve University, and is included in OhioLINK, the statewide electronic academic catalog system. Online borrowing privileges are reserved for students registered at Siegal College. Community members are welcome to browse the catalog, visit the Garber Library and borrow materials.
