Case Libraries' Collection Management and Development Committee

The Case Libraries' Collection Management and Development Committee will serve as a forum for discussion of campus-wide collection management activities and will develop strategies for coping with changes in our economic and technological context. The Committee will develop recommendations and policy proposals to ensure consistency and balance in monographic and serials collections among Case libraries and to guide the integration of electronic information resources across Case Western Reserve University.

Annually, the Case library directors will suggest a list of topics for the committee to investigate. Examples of issues that may be addressed or actions to be taken by the committee on an ongoing basis are:

  • Develop principles and methods to guide the assessment of Case Western Reserve University information resources and redundancy in collections among Case libraries.
  • Share innovative information delivery systems.
  • Assess the appropriateness of the balance in the Case collections between monograph and serials collections.
  • Recommend the acquisition of electronic resources in a collaborative effort to assure the Case community efficient and effective access to research databases.
  • Investigate the feasibility of a communal offsite storage and delivery service for all Case libraries.
  • Study the issue of digital archiving.

The Case Libraries' Collection Management and Development Committee will consist of a representative(s) from each of the Case libraries: Kelvin Smith Library, Law Library, Health Sciences Libraries, and the Harris Library at MSASS. It is desirable that the Committee Chair be rotated among libraries on an annual basis.

The Associate Director for Collection Management (Kelvin Smith Library) will serve as the liaison to the OhioLINK Cooperative Information Resources Management Committee (CIRM). CIRM focuses on statewide cooperative resource management issues recommending new policies and procedures, explores and makes recommendations to the Library Advisory Council on new databases and publishers that OhioLINK should consider acquiring, and charges subject groups to discuss, comment on, and make known information about the development of content, etc. for the OhioLINK site.

The committee will establish ad hoc groups as necessary to carry out tasks related to its charge and will maintain an awareness of trends in the publishing world and information marketplace.

This committee shall submit recommendations for university-wide collection management policies to the Case Library Directors for action. The committee will submit an annual report in July documenting the year's activities. Committee members will also participate in a spring brown bag lunch series that will highlight activities of all CWRU Libraries committees.
