Kelvin Smith Library Collections
Kelvin Smith Library Collections are rich and varied, at nearly 1.6 million items — books, journals, microfilm, scripts, electronic content, media, theses and
dissertations (both electronic and in print), and growing digital collections.
Within the Kelvin Smith Library there are also:
- Government Documents - federal, state & local resources, scientific and technical resources, statistical data (including ICPSR) and services and instruction
- Center for Statistics and Geospatial Data - statistical analysis and GIS resources & maps, with specialized software, training, and other services
- Special Collections Department - rare books, manuscripts, distinctive special collections in print and in new digital collections and exhibits
- Digital Library and Digital Case- digitized books, special local projects such as the Cleveland History Project, and digital exhibits. A new initiative is Digital Case, the digital institutional repository and archive of the university.
- Electronic Collections and Databases - a rich set of research databases, journals and magazines, newspapers, digital media, and more, available to the faculty, staff, and students of the university
Other University Library Collections
Kulas Music Library - a satellite library of the Kelvin Smith Library, housing collections in the area of music. Over 45,000 items include music scores, books, sound and video recordings, mircroforms and music periodicals.
Astronomy Library - a departmental research library with print collections in astronomy and astrophysics.
Engineering Reading Room - a departmental reading room with a small print collection of current engineering related periodicals and reference resources.
Retrospective Research Collections Center - Research materials used less frequently, housed 1/2 mile from KSL on Cedar Avenue. Visitors are welcome, and appointments may be made to use the reading room and onsite collections. Cedar and Iron Mountain repository sites house books, journals, and microfilm and are retrieved on request to KSL on weekdays.
University Archives - the university's collections and records of the Case Institute of Technology, Western Reserve University, and Case Western Reserve University, from 1826 to the present. Includes 24 million pages of university materials such as yearbooks, newsletters, alumni publications, records and reports of the university administration; from recent digitization projects, over 45GB of digital items approximately 2400 copies of text and graphics from the collection. Additionally, University Archives provides records management for the university, and research services to those who are interested in campus history.
